Meet Dave

Meet Dave

What brought you to the role at Universal Packaging?

While I’m the Universal ‘newbie’ (I only started in January) I’m loving the role, the team and the business. I had been looking for a new opportunity that offered variety, a great culture and the ability to ‘make a difference’ – I certainly landed on my feet here. I still have a lot to learn about the business, our products and our customers. But it’s a learning curve I am thoroughly enjoying.

What does a typical day look like in your job?

As for most of the team, Mondays are made up of several meetings to update, plan and prioritise. The rest of the week I’m largely free to work on new initiatives and, at the moment, get myself up-to-speed with the business. So far most of my time has been in the office but I’m now at the point where I can get out, visit some of our customers, and see our products in action. I’m always looking for things we can improve to ensure our service is better than anyone’s.

What are the highlights of your workday?

I am really enjoying learning about our products and customers, but without question my main highlight is working with the UPL team. With such a helpful, talented and cheerful group coming to work each day is a joy.

Our new Commercial Business Manager brings with him a whole lot of experience and energy. Which is just as well – we’ve got lots of ideas that need actioning…

And some challenges?

I have two main challenges (which is fine – I love them). The first, building my expertise. Every day is a learning day. The second is a logistical one. Everyone here wants to provide better service, improve efficiency and reduce costs – there is certainly no shortage of great ideas. The challenge is to prioritise and get them done.

How do you think your personal attributes help with the job?

I think my experience, attitude and personal values fit well here. I enjoy looking for the next challenge, particularly if it helps our customers, and working in a close-knit team. My family and friends are probably sick of hearing my enthusiasm for the place.

A package of your three favourite things has turned up on your desk: what’s inside?

1: I’ll unashamedly plagiarise what Matt said “Unlimited tickets to travel anywhere in the world on Air New Zealand business class for the entire UP team… with no finish date”. Travel offers so many new opportunities and experiences that it’s a shame we don’t all have the ability to do it more.

2: A fountain of youth. So that we can all make the most of the travel in ‘1’ (as long as I don’t have to go back to my youth and make the same stupid mistakes again).

3: A puppy, or two. Need I say more?
