Mark Leary

While Mark has only been in the role of Technical Sales Engineer here for six months his work as his previous decades of experience is already helping to make sure everything’s running like a well-oiled machine. Here’s what he had to say in our Q&A…

What brought you to Universal Packaging?

When I saw the job ad it literally summed up my previous 20+ years’ work experience. So I raced home that night, updated my CV, and applied. About 10 days later I met Matt and Jed and knew within 10 minutes I wanted to be part of the team. That was just over 6 months ago, and since then there have been quite a few frequent flyer miles racked up, almost 20,000kms driven and a huge range of work undertaken. It’s been a great experience so far!

What does a typical day look like in your job?

It starts early, usually with a 5km walk with my partner, then a bowl of bircher and a strong coffee. Then I’m either into the office on the paperwork or out visiting clients. On site I’m making sure everything’s working as it should and often running yield analysis. Here too I often work as the conduit between customers and Universal’s awesome customer services, technical services and logistics teams.

What are the highlights of your work day?

Throughout my years of technical work I’ve always enjoyed hands-on problem solving. Give me a chance to make something work a little better, sort out an issue, or facilitate something being resolved (be it technical or logistical), I’ll jump into it. I always enjoy hearing about my clients’ interests and their families and, having two teenagers myself, I find it easy to connect and chat. That’s always been a highlight of the work for me.

And some challenges?

Taking a proactive approach does require you to effectively keep on top of all the little things you’re chasing up for various people. Often the info isn’t readily available and there are multiple people involved in providing a resolution. But that just makes it all the more satisfying once it all comes together.

A package of your three favourite things has turned up on your desk: what’s inside?

  • Tickets to do something fun and adventurous with my family.
  • A mean burger with a delicious sauce (and bacon of course), with thick cut chips and a nice ale.
  • And since we can choose anything… keys to a 1972 Porsche 911-S. It’s got that classic shape, yet with several years of engineering improvements. And ideally it’s been in a shed under blankets for 40 years!
