The nation has spoken! A great response to our freight of the nation survey.

Earlier this year we put out our Freight of the Nation survey. From Cape Reinga to Bluff, we wanted to know what was front of mind behind the scenes with our nation’s storers and senders.
First, and most importantly, we want to give a big thanks to all of those who filled out the survey. We weren’t honestly quite sure how well it would be received. Everyone’s busy and sometimes it can be hard to motivate people to share their thoughts online – even with the promise of chocolate on offer! However the response was truly impressive, both in the quantity and quality of feedback we received.

The survey asked a wide variety of questions around pallet packaging, product damage and other key distribution aspects. The small details contained within some of the figures and the feedback we received were illuminating.

You wanted to hear about new technologies, sustainability advice and promotions. Perhaps not surprisingly, the international supply chain and Covid lockdowns were seen as major challenges for the future. Product damage was also a real issue for some, with regular pallet returns causing headaches. There were a huge number of reasons for this damage and clearly New Zealand needs help in this area. It was also important to gauge what the key motivators were when purchasing pallet wrap. Here the reliability of wrap was seen as more significant than cost per roll, a response that highlights just how frustrating (and costly) wrap breakage can be. So too is the big picture perspective from the survey results important. The information will be used in part to help launch new tools for our customers – an initiative Universal Packaging is currently working on. We look forward to sharing more news on developments in the near future.

Finally, the answers were really great to the question “what’s the coolest thing that’s happened to you over the last year?”

Some of the responses here were really uplifting. Many commented about how thankful they were to meet the challenges of Covid thanks to their teams, families and communities. For some it was important purchases like buying houses and hybrid cars, or achievements, like surfing, heli-skiing, renovation jobs or “getting out on the motorbike and completing 2500km in a week”.

Others that brought a smile to the face included plenty of births and weddings, which are always nice to read of.

Someone mentioned winning Lotto as their ‘cool thing’, which certainly had us wondering about how much was won – and what their plans were now.

For others the ‘cool things’ got giggles for just how realistic and genuine they were. “Slept in” was one answer. Another was “Went to KFC for the first time this year recently.” We couldn’t agree more – cool things indeed!

Thanks again for all the valuable insight and fantastic answers. We hope everyone loved the chocolates and that the big prize, a Weber barbeque, brings many delicious meals to its Mainfreight winner.
