During our research for new recycling techniques we came across an interesting article and thought it was worth sharing.

After a waste emergency from closed landfill sites Rome is the latest city to encourage recycling with clear tangible benefits to participants.

With every bottle fed into a compactor at select locations citizens receive a discount in their public transport fee. With Italy leading in bottled water consumption throughout Europe there’ll undoubtedly be plenty of raw material close at hand for thrifty commuters.

Similar initiatives have been introduced in Beijing, Istanbul and in parts of Indonesia, and there are various beachside cafes around the world now offering free coffees in return for rubbish collection.

What do you think is the best way to introduce such a scheme to New Zealand? Travel discounts? Cheap jandals? School fees? Subsidised All Blacks tickets? We’re sure there are plenty of opportunities out there!
