About

We are passionate about leading the thought behind and wrap around New Zealand’s pallets. It’s how we look beyond the package to the products, processes and potential of our clients. It’s why we now lead the way in specialised pallet wrapping film, machinery, application and optimisation.

Since we first opened our doors over close to four decades ago, our team has worked with New Zealand companies from Kaitaia to Bluff. Be it light or heavy, from tissue paper to concrete blocks, if it’s dispatched on a daily basis the chances are we’ve helped to wrap it.

This experience is vital. Correct stretch wrapping not only ensures goods arrive in the best condition, it minimises damage costs and maximises process efficiency. That’s why we take a broad view of your operation – to see where we can save time and money within every aspect of your pallet wrapping process.

Pallet wrap, shrink wrap or stretch film, you can call it what you want. But when you need to get the most from product and process, from how and where it’s wrapped to the security, efficiency and cost effectiveness of shipping goods, call us first.

Our team

What I’m responsible for

I believe that leadership is a privilege and it is important to create an environment where everyone loves to come to work every day.  This will in turn lead to a thriving workplace where we all work together, heading in the same direction to achieve overall greatness and results for the business.

Something I’d like to wrap up

I would love to wrap up a whole bunch of love and kindness to share around endlessly! I hope to one day be in a position where I can make a difference and assist more with a charity involving disadvantaged children.

Something I’d like to unwrap

The ability to wave a magic wand to be able to travel endlessly around the world. We can learn so much from worldly travel, and experiencing a balance of different cultures would be so wonderful.

What I’m responsible for

Helping the UP team deliver on our promises. We are lucky to be part of almost every major NZ company’s supply chain, so it’s critical that we ensure they have superior packaging and machinery operating flawlessly.

Something I’d like to wrap up

The end to the current wars happening in the world. It’s senseless and unfortunate that it’s the innocent who suffers. It reminds us all that history will keep repeating itself until we learn from it.

Something I’d like to unwrap

A Fleming 85 Yacht and the skillset to sail it around the world.

What I’m responsible for

Coordinating the marketing and sales team’s efforts to ensure our sales results exceed our targets.

Something I’d like to wrap up

Food and clothing packages for children and families living in poor circumstances.

Something I’d like to unwrap

A cost-effective, easy to administer and permanent treatment for cancer

What I’m responsible for

I look after all things finance-related.

Something I’d like to wrap up

A winning lotto ticket. It would be awesome to see the look on someone’s face when they realise they have won. Also, if I’m lucky they may be nice enough to send a little my way??

Something I’d like to unwrap

Unlimited world travel, there are so many beautiful places out there that I would love to get to explore.

What I’m responsible for:

Leading and motivating the Customer Service & Machinery team to provide excellent service for our customers.

Something I’d like to wrap up:

A winning lotto ticket to help people.

Something I’d like to unwrap:

Food, a puppy, and a ticket to travel the world.

What I’m responsible for

Helping medium to large stretch film users to reduce their plastic consumption and improve load security.

Something I’d like to wrap up

A lifelong subscription of happiness

Something I’d like to unwrap

Would have to be a golden beach with eternal sun shine – and no wind

What I’m responsible for

I take care of our customers by putting orders on, making sure they have enough wrap and providing service with a smile.

Something I’d like to wrap up

An all-paid trip to New Zealand for my friends overseas, so we can see each other in person.

Something I’d like to unwrap

Anything owl related, owls are my favourite animal, and I can always do with more owl nick-nacks.

What I’m responsible for:

I work with the sales team making sure they have all the info they require when going to see our customers. I book appointments and flights, run reports, and follow up on any tasks for the sales team and customers. I am also admin support – I do all the little admin-type jobs for the office.

Something I’d like to wrap up:

The end to child abuse. Every child has a right to feel safe in their own home. I would also love to be able to wrap up a boat for my husband. His face when he saw it would be priceless.

Something I’d like to unwrap:

A litter of Corgi puppies. They are so beautiful and then my fur baby at home would have some friends.

An Aston Martin DB9, but I’ll settle for a Rupes Millie!

Our history

Founded by Neville Goddin in 1985, Universal Packaging originally started as a contract packing company. In 1988 we diversified into specialty containers, closures and primary packaging and, for close to two decades, worked hard to meet the ever- changing demands for packaging.

In 2007 this changed with the progression into our current business focus. Kiwi companies were crying out for better, faster, more effective load containment. It was a need that could not be ignored. We began to focus solely on end of line packaging, specialising in pallet load containment products and machinery.

In 2009 we became the sole NZ distributor for Wulftec’s range of pallet wrapping and strapping machinery. In 2011 we added the Spinny range to our stable, becoming exclusive NZ distributors for this technology also. In 2013 we undertook Australasia’s first greater confidence.” ever installation of dual floor-mounted rotary arm Wulftec stretch wrappers.

Since then we’ve introduced new technology and, more recently, have grown our expertise with safety systems for stretch wrapping equipment.

We’ve also stayed on the cutting edge of product development. In 2010 we launched ClearWrap, this high performance film proving to be immediately popular. In 2012 SmartWrap was introduced, again to widespread appeal. In 2017 XTWrap arrived and then, in 2018, the innovative 33-layer NanoWrap became a game-changer.

Around this time we began trailing our SCOPE programme. This real-time film monitoring system provides a clear and comprehensive view of every pallet wrapped. Now NZ companies can correctly assess, refine and manage packaging processes with far greater confidence.

In 2021 we took another big step up when Spicers NZ acquired Universal Packaging. Rubbing shoulders with well-regarded brands such as Total Supply (who are also in the Spicers group), Universal Packaging is now on a bigger stage than ever before.

A renowned and respected brand, Spicers have been serving the country’s paper needs for over 100 years now. Their move to focus on sustainable growth has seen them invest in the paper, sign, display and packaging industries over the last two decades. The acquisition of Universal Packaging is another example of this future-forward mindset.

This new partnership builds towards a dynamic future for both companies. We expect to provide increased efficiency and effectiveness in our technology, unwavering capability and care in our service. The years ahead promise great things for both brands and, as we bind together and send secure, great things for our customers too.

“Around this time we began trialing our SCOPE programme… now NZ companies can correctly assess, refine and manage packaging processes with far greater confidence.”

Our values

Quite simply, our values inform every aspect of our work. As a team we’re always working with the business goals of every customer front of mind. It is why we’ll only recommend a product or process if we can prove it will achieve these goals. Why we’ll always work with the integrity of our reputation in mind. Why we never settle for second-best.

This is a company-wide ethos – the reason why we bind together in our efforts so New Zealand can send secure. It is a non-negotiable standard that delivers purpose to our work and peace of mind to our customers.

Integrity

Assured values.
Absolute worth.

New Zealand is a small country where a company’s reputation travels far and wide. Our adherence to guiding principles, customer solutions service and individual and company accountability ensures this reputation is of the highest order.

Empathy

A helping hand.

Only by understanding the challenges faced by our customers can we help them overcome any problems they may face. Only by recognising differences can we value, celebrate and grow the unique skills and personalities within our team. Everyday, in every way, kindness and awareness is crucial.

Hilarity

Let the good
times roll.

When the days are long, and the work is hard, a little laughter and good-natured fun can make all the difference. It’s a down-to-earth approach that our customers certainly appreciate too. That’s why we’ll never get too wrapped up in ourselves. Life’s too short not to love a good laugh!

Ingenuity

Extra miles
make for better
results.

Change is always constant. By thinking outside the box we can improve packaging and distribution performances in ways that may not be at first obvious. By backing this with impeccable, unbeatable service we can go the extra mile – and the places we arrive are often of immense value for all.

Loyalty

To one. To all.

We are loyal to our customers because their success is our success. We are loyal to our team, pitching in and helping out whenever it’s needed. Above all, we are loyal to ourselves. We’ll never place quick gains or selfish goals above our personal values or our company ethos.
