“Prehab” for your pallet wrapper

“Prehab” for your pallet wrapper

Your pallet wrapper is a valuable member of the warehouse team and, when it goes down, so does the chances of winning the DC game. It’s best to avoid injury to the wrapper in the first place – which is why we recommend the following “prehabilitation” strategies…

Wrapper maintenance issues can be both incredibly frustrating and costly. We’ve put together a simple list of four ‘training tips’ to ensure you can make the most of this great team player.

 ----------------------------------------------------------------------

1. Keep it in the field of play

The positioning of a pallet wrapper is important to its longevity and continued strength. When considering placement in the warehouse flow, avoid exposure to New Zealand’s harsh elements. While these machines are built tough, keeping them under appropriate cover will increase their lifespan.

Proper fencing and light barriers should also separate a wrapper from forklift movements if possible. Forklift damage can be costly to fix so ensure that speed limits on forklift movements are obeyed close to the wrapper, particularly if fencing is not yet in place. By following the appropriate safety processes you can protect an important player and avoid unnecessary pain in the future.

2. Stick to the game plan

Clear instructions and processes for operating the wrapper are a must. Pre-empt foul play by ensuring passwords are only accessible to those with the credentials. If necessary, keep a playbook nearby of the best settings for different types of loads. That way the machine can easily be reset on-site if things go wrong.

Unfortunately, not all resets can be done remotely and you want to avoid callouts for preventable issues. Prevention is key so book regular pallet wrapper maintenance checks with our all-star Service Coordinator. Spotting possible damage to the machine and tracking wear-and-tear might prevent a stretcher off the field later on.

3. Know the rule book

Yes – there is one! It’s called the manual and it’s full of trouble-shooting tips should something unexpected happen. It may seem like common sense but when you’re in a rush it’s one of those simple go-tos that is often overlooked.

Before getting on the phone, check the manual, and then look for the obvious issues. Is the power supply on? Are the emergency stops deactivated? Do any safety switches need to be reactivated?  If there’s still no clear way forward you’ll need to call us to arrange an equipment tech. And for the rogue player that’s on every team, one warning: Riding the carriage is a big no-no! We’ve dealt with costly repairs to Spinny carriages after some bright spark has decided to sit on the carriage as it goes up and down.

4. Make sure it hits the showers

Keeping your pallet wrapper clean goes a long way to prolonging its life. We’ve serviced some crazy callouts that could have been prevented with a thorough cleaning schedule. We’re not only talking general warehouse grit either. Think rats’ nests and birds setting up shop. Dirt (and critters) can take a toll!

----------------------------------------------------------------------

To ensure a long life it pays to make certain that pallet wrappers are set up correctly, treated with care and frequently assessed by those with the right expertise.

When we send off a pristine pallet wrapper to its new workplace, we want to know that it’s meeting expectations. And if it’s not covering the ground (or the pallets) like it should, well… it’s time to call the physio onto the field (AKA our excellent service team).
