Cut the waffle: Why talking tech on-site is Universally appealing
There’s plenty of social media nonsense out there about what it means to be a sales-superstar-numero-uno-alpha-achiever. Yes, a bit of charm and warmth can go a long way in cultivating client relationships. But to deliver enduring success in our work, it always pays to add effective value.
This is why our BDMs are always focused on the technical deliverables of any site visit, analysing product and process. Of course we enjoy catching up with our clients. But make no mistake, we’re here to get the job done.

Measure by measure
Our work starts and finishes with ensuring everything is measured accurately. Not all packaging is created equal and, while a per-roll cost comparison can at first seem like an easy method of comparison, it’s important to remember this is often not a simple ‘apples with apples’ comparison.
Superior production technology now provides pallet wrap with hugely improved load containment metrics. This film can really go the distance, ensuring Kiwi businesses can do a lot more with less. At first glance such film can appear more expensive per roll. Which is why an on-site wrap audit provides such valuable insight.

A sideways look
Sometimes, a straightforward answer first requires a sideways perspective. Our tilt test calculates how much movement and stress the stretch wrap can maintain integrity. This helps businesses assess the optimum film and stretch wrapping for their specific products.
Our packaging specialists also examine wrap parameters. These include carriage speed, turntable speed, film force, overwrap and rotations. Changing one parameter can impact all the other parts of the process, so it’s a good idea to have an industry expert check that everything is running optimally to save on wrap costs while avoiding product loss.
At this stage we will also assess pallet stack patterns to ensure loads are evenly distributed across the pallet and within the wrap.

The bigger picture
Our work also often involves a wider site audit to establish the most efficient, effective and safest way to move goods around the distribution centre and through to dispatch. Site optimisation is one of our key focuses here, ensuring New Zealand companies can “save millions in the millimetres” as they aim to improve DC efficiency.
As part of this work we’re often called in to check the safety systems surrounding pallet wrapping equipment, be it for new systems or for the retrofitting of existing set-ups. Ensuring people are safeguarded without productivity being compromised requires expert acumen and pragmatic guidance.
At Universal Packaging we understand that a good business relationship is built on ongoing trust and value, not a flashy sales pitch.
So our consultants take the time to carefully measure, assess and listen so they understand our customers’ needs accurately. They have the inside industry knowledge to find optimal solutions, and they’re here to answer your questions.
It’s this approach that has resonated so much with these customers. After all, while smooth-talking is nice, there’s nothing like the wrap-around service of industry expertise to get the job done.
